One of the most important problems the world is currently experiencing is climate change. Researchers are searching for affordable, sustainable energy sources in response to major environmental concerns such as rising greenhouse gas emissions, water scarcity, and the depletion of fossil fuels. Although microalgae have comparatively better photosynthetic efficiency and growth rates than other algae, microalgal biomass is a promising feedstock for biofuel and other useful goods. Additionally, they can be produced in various water conditions, such as salty water, seawater, or diverse industrial effluent. To cleanse wastewater and economically produce useful compounds and biofuels from microalgal biomass, this chapter offers a comprehensive review of integrated microalgae-based biorefineries. This review also presents the state-of-the-art microalgae-based biorefinery technology to define a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method.
