Drone Technology and Food Security in Zimbabwe's A2 Farming Model

Abstract

The chapter dwells on a study about how drone technology can be harnessed to improve food security in a third world setting which has been beset by a combination of population growth and climate change. Using a qualitative approach, a field survey involving 23 farmers operating under the A2 farming model was undertaken in Zimbabwe's Bindura district. Employing the thematic analysis technique, the study found out that use of drones can lead to early detection of pests and diseases, allowing for early treatment and increasing yields. However, the study noted that there are significant huddles that lie ahead for drone technology to be adopted successfully, most noteworthy of which is the cost associated with acquisition of agricultural drones.
