USToMs: A Methodology for Microservice Identification from User Stories

Abstract

Designing microservices often remains empirical, lacking traceability with business needs and leading to inconsistent service boundaries. This paper addresses this challenge by introducing USToMS (User Story To Microservices), a structured methodology that derives candidate microservices directly from user stories. The approach applies systematic rules and heuristics to delimit bounded contexts (BC), then models each context as a microservice using hexagonal architecture. A case study in e-commerce shows improved traceability, clearer service isolation, and reduced design complexity. Perspectives include formalizing and automating rules to extend USToMS toward large-scale and tool-supported adoption.
