Understanding Structural Failures Through Buildability Assessment: A Case Study of Collapsed Buildings in Accra, Ghana

Abstract

Purpose: This study focuses on the elements that lead to building collapse and the ensuing effects on the construction sector. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study uses a quantitative research approach to generate reliable results. A sample size of 150 was obtained using a basic random sampling technique. A comprehensive questionnaire was developed based on the literature review, and data analysis was facilitated using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings: The study has unearthed significant insights relevant to building industry professionals. It was found that the structure’s total weight and bearing pressure are crucial in determining the appropriate foundation for the proposed building’s bearing capacity. Additionally, it was discovered that some buildings had not undergone proper architectural and structural design processes or passed the regulatory authorities’ approval process. Research Limitations: The sole reliance on quantitative methods may have limited the depth of understanding regarding participants' experiences and contextual factors. Practical Implications: Once the design and buildability are compromised, the building will eventually collapse, which may necessitate less-than-good buildability. Social Implications: This study reveals that building collapse has serious ramifications, including the loss of lives in society and a tarnished reputation for the construction industry. Originality/Value: It pioneers the application of buildability assessment as a forensic analytical framework for understanding building collapse incidents.
