Transformative green innovation hubs for youth: reskilling and curriculum development for sustainability

Abstract

The green economy and its transition pathway have gained recognition globally as a precursor for innovation, building skills and sustainable development. This study investigates the potential of Green Innovation Hubs (GiHUBs) in advancing sustainable development, with a particular focus on engaging youth through higher education, reskilling initiatives, and the integration of sustainability into educational curricula. It outlines initiatives that integrate green social innovations and intelligent energy projects to empower youth and enhance environmental sustainability. The research evaluates the role of these hubs in developing sustainable learning environments, advancing climate education, and preparing youth for climate change adaptation and mitigation. It emphasizes the momentum of the global shift towards a green economy, where supportive legislation increasingly aligns market decisions with environmental objectives. Drawing on strategies from the Global North, the study highlights benefits including resource efficiency, adoption of green technologies, and environmental conservation. While acknowledging challenges such as public skepticism and the need for behavioral change, it notes growing societal and governmental recognition of the green economy, suggesting a future in which sustainable practices become the global norm. The study further highlights ways available for nurturing a generation that embraces sustainability and recognizes the intrinsic link between prosperity and environmental stewardship.
