Trans catheter PDA closure: Effect on LV size and function.

Abstract

Background: PDA constitutes 10 % of all the congenital heart diseases. LV dysfunction, endarteritis and pulmonary hypertension are known complications of untreated PDA. Aim: Our study purpose is to analyse effect of transcatheter PDA closure on LA, LV dimensions and LV function in the paediatric age group. Patients and methods :This prospective study Included 26 patients with mean age of 18±8 months, mean BW of 14± 5 kg and mean PDA diameter (pulmonic end) 2.5±0.6. Echocardiographic follow up was done pre-PDA closure then post PDA closure (24 hours and 3 months post-intervention). Base line and post PDA closure Ejection Fraction (EF) , Fractional shortening (FS), left atrial diameter (LAD) , LAD z score and indexed EDV were recorded. 100 % of cases underwent successful PDA closure without complications. Results: LVEF and FS show immediate significant decline followed by near complete recovery at later follow up. There was a significant decrease of Indexed LVEDV from pre closure state to immediate and 3 months follow up. LA dimensions (indexed and z score) decreased significantly at 3 months follow up. Conclusion: Transcatheter PDA closure is a safe method and associated with reduction in LV and LA dimensions.
