Free Space Optical (FSO) communication holds promise for providing low-cost rural connectivity, but traditional FSO systems remain unsuitable due to their high cost and complexity. This paper introduces WiFoO (WiFi over Optical), a novel, work in progress FSO solution based on IEEE 802.11 standards, designed to significantly reduce hardware and installation costs. By leveraging consumer-grade WiFi technology and innovative optical transmission techniques, WiFoO offers a practical approach to bridging the digital divide in underserved areas. We focus on the practicalities of implementing this solution, addressing key challenges such as alignment, component selection, and system resilience. Our prototype demonstrates the feasibility of transmitting WiFi signals over FSO links, achieving notable performance in range and data rates. We discuss the design considerations, hardware adaptations, and field testing results to date, providing insights into the real-world applicability of WiFoO. This work represents a significant step towards making high-speed internet access more accessible in regions where traditional infrastructure deployment is challenging or cost-prohibitive.
