Towards Induction Motor Speed Control using a Three-Phase to Single-Phase AC-AC Matrix Converter

Abstract

The Matrix converters have drawn interest from many researchers in recent years because of their uniqueness. There are several variations of the matrix converter with various topologies and various control strategies have been proposed. Power can flow in both directions. In this topology, the storage capacitor is not required since this topology is a direct AC-AC conversion. The converter is a frequency changer that, like others, has its features namely, advantages, disadvantages, challenges, and limitations. The focus of this paper is to develop a three-phase to single-phase Direct AC-AC Matrix Converter. The design and implementation of a three-phase to single-phase circuitry to control the speed of an induction motor is presented. An experiment was set up in which measurements of various parameters such as voltage, current, switching frequency, and induction motor speed were taken. It was observed that the variation of the switching frequency of the control switches had an impact on the speed of the induction motor.
