Abstract The sustainability of cocoa production in West Africa is crucial due to its important socio-economic and environmental impacts. Traditionally, cocoa was cultivated in agroforestry systems, which maintained biodiversity and soil health. However, unsustainable practices such as the shift to monoculture in recent decades, driven by the pursuit of higher yields, have contributed to soil degradation, decreased biodiversity, and increased pest and disease outbreaks. This case study addresses the critical need for sustainable soil health management to enhance cocoa productivity while protecting the environment in West Africa. By assessing soil health challenges and implementing effective management practices, such as agroforestry, integrated nutrient management, and erosion control measures, cocoa farmers can improve soil fertility, increase yields, and contribute to climate change mitigation. Ultimately, this case study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of soil health challenges and solutions, supporting West African cocoa producers in achieving global sustainability goals and improving their socio-economic living conditions.
