Tirzepatide in Egypt: A New Era in Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity Management

Abstract

Egypt is currently grappling with a substantial public health crisis marked by the increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity.These interwoven metabolic conditions place a significant strain on the national healthcare infrastructure and considerably impair the quality of life for millions of citizens.The recent introduction of tirzepatide (marketed as Mounjaro) in the Egyptian market represents a pivotal therapeutic advancement for managing these disorders.Tirzepatide is a novel agent acting as a dual agonist for both the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors.Clinical evidence has consistently demonstrated its superior efficacy in achieving robust glycemic control and promoting substantial weight reduction.This review offers a comprehensive analysis of tirzepatide, covering its pharmacological mechanism, summarizing the crucial outcomes from the SURPASS (T2DM) and SURMOUNT (obesity) clinical trial programs, and discussing the initial real-world evidence (RWE) of its use.Furthermore, the article explores the dynamics of its introduction within the Egyptian context, examines its potential clinical implications for local medical practice, identifies anticipated challenges to widespread adoption, and provides policy and research recommendations aimed at maximizing its therapeutic impact.This manuscript is intended to be a timely and clinically relevant resource for Egyptian healthcare professionals, policymakers, and researchers as they oversee the integration of this transformative therapy into the current management paradigm for T2DM and obesity.
