Sub-Saharan Africa faces the world’s most significant energy access deficit, especially in rural areas. This paper examines the role of mini-grids in addressing this challenge and fostering socioeconomic development. It analyzes the technological advancements, decreasing costs, and growing deployment of solar-powered mini-grids and highlights their potential to provide reliable and clean electricity for households and productive uses. It explores the economic benefits such as increased agricultural productivity and revenue generation, and reduced carbon emissions. While acknowledging the significant progress and numerous successful case studies across the region, the paper also addresses the economic, technical and regulatory barriers hindering widespread deployment. Finally, it emphasizes the need for better financing models, supportive policy frameworks, and continued technological advancements to unlock the full potential of mini-grids in powering sustainable rural settlements in Sub-Saharan Africa.
