The Human Side of Robotic Warehousing

Abstract

The chapter explores the perceptions of employees working in Amazon's Robotic Mobile Fulfillment Systems (RMFS). We used a netnographic approach to uncover employees' perceptions related to the use of this technology, as well as the social and ethical considerations related to the topic. The results of the study show several advantages perceived by the employees in terms of flexibility, improved picking rates, and ergonomics at work. Nevertheless, numerous risks and challenges emerged from the qualitative analysis conducted specifically in relation to job security and human-machine interaction. The results and analyses offer us several perspectives regarding the automation and robotization of workspaces in relation to employees' perceptions and social considerations.
