Abstract Cost‐effective and readily available materials employable in water splitting are desired today. We report the formation of the ferrite CoFe 2 O 4 and the substitution of Co with Ni and Mn and Fe with Ce. The formed ferrites were characterized by x‐ray diffraction, scanning and high‐resolution electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis. Water splitting examination of the ferrites showed that these heteroatomic substitutions improved CoFe 2 O 4 catalytic performance. The Co 0.4 Ni 0.3 Mn 0.3 Fe 1.7 Ce 0.3 O 4 electrode had the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of 181 mV, 83 mV/dec and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of 246 mV, 37 mV/dec at 10 mA/cm 2 current density. All the electrodes also showed good stability.
