Telecom Tower Stability Monitoring System: Integration of Environmental Sensors for Structural Health Assessment

Abstract

This paper presents the Telecommunication Tower Stability Profile (TTSP) system, designed to safeguard valuable assets at telecommunication sites and provide characteristic profile data for telecom tower operators and manufacturers to develop rehabilitation plans and new designs. The proposed solution focuses on measuring environmental factors such as wind, humidity, acceleration, displacements, etc., using optical and wireless sensors. These measured signals are integrated into a remote web application for data acquisition and profiling. The monitoring system aims to estimate the stability of the telecom tower and assess the correlation between tower stability and external conditions such as temperature changes, wind speed, wind direction, and building structure. Various sensors including temperature, humidity, tilt, soil moisture, and atmospheric pressure sensors are employed to monitor the telecom tower’s structure effectively. The temperature and humidity sensors track internal and external temperature and humidity levels, respectively. The tilt sensor monitors the tower’s tilt, while the soil moisture sensor measures moisture levels in the soil surrounding the tower. Furthermore, the atmospheric pressure sensor keeps tabs on the air pressure around the tower, enhancing the overall monitoring capabilities of the TTSP system.
