Abstract

Teaching and learning STEM subjects using e-textbooks as mediational tools has become increasingly prominent in educational settings. E-textbooks offer several advantages over traditional textbooks, particularly in their ability to integrate multimedia elements such as videos, simulations, and interactive exercises. This multimedia capability enhances student engagement by catering to different learning styles and providing dynamic, real-world examples that can clarify complex concepts. Moreover, e-textbooks often allow for interactive features, such as embedded quizzes and assessments, which provide immediate feedback to students and enable teachers to monitor student progress more effectively. This real-time feedback mechanism supports personalized learning approaches, where students can revisit challenging topics or explore additional resources based on their individual needs. From a pedagogical standpoint, e-textbooks are designed to support active learning strategies by encouraging students to explore concepts through hands-on activities or collaborative projects facilitated by digital tools. This approach aligns with the principles of the Cultural Historical Activity Theory framework, promoting deeper understanding through active engagement with content. However, the effectiveness of e-textbooks in STEM education also depends on several factors, including access to technology, digital literacy skills of students and educators, and the quality of content and instructional design. Ensuring equitable access to digital resources and providing training and support for both teachers and students are crucial for maximizing the benefits of e-textbooks in STEM learning environments. In summary, while e-textbooks offer exciting opportunities to enhance teaching and learning in STEM subjects through multimedia integration, interactive features, and active learning strategies, their successful implementation requires careful consideration of technological infrastructure, pedagogical approaches, and support mechanisms within educational institutions.
