Adequate iodine nutrition is essential to prevent iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) and Universal salt iodization (USI) is recommended as the most effective strategy for the fight against IDD. This article briefly highlights the efforts put in place to combat and eliminate this endemic disease which was a serious public health problem in Cameroon in 1991, in line with WHO recommendations for sustainable elimination of IDD. It shows clearly the role play by key stakeholders involved including local government, multilateral organizations, and producers or importers of iodized salt. This paper also discusses major challenges hindering a sustainable IDD elimination at the national level such as iodization lapses, technical capacity, funding and goitrogenic effects to prevent the resurgence of IDD. While significant progress has been achieved in the fight against IDD, addressing the persistent challenges and ensuring sustained commitment from all stakeholders are crucial for long-term success.
