Study of choroidal thickness in patients with migraine using optical coherence tomography

Abstract

Background Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is primarily used to image the layers of the human retina since it is a noninvasive, noncontact method that produces high-resolution cross–sections of living tissues. An assessment of choroidal thickness (CT) may reveal potential retinal circulation issues that are impacted by migraine vasomotor issues. Aim To use OCT to investigate CT in migraine sufferers. Patients and methods A total of 45 patients, both sexes, between the ages of 15 and 40, with migraines in attack-free periods (group A) and the highest corrected visual acuity of 6/6, as well as 30 healthy people as a control group (group B), participated in this prospective, cross–sectional, and comparative study. OCT measurements were performed on each patient. Results Sub-foveal CT (SFCT) (eye within the same side of a migraine attack) was insignificantly different between migraine treatment, with and without aura group, and migraine disability assessment scale scoring system. There was an insignificant difference between SFCT of eye within same side of migraine attack and thickness of the fellow eye ( P =0.538), while thickness of both eyes was significantly thinner than in the control group ( P <0.05). Conclusions The average SFCT was much lower in migraineurs than in healthy people. Additionally, as compared with healthy controls, migraineurs with and without aura had noticeably thinner choroids.
