Strengthening Telemedicine and Remote Patient Monitoring in Nigeria With Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

The advancement of telemedicine empowers healthcare providers to treat patients remotely via telecommunication technology, thus bridging the healthcare gap for patients in remote regions of Nigeria. As such, the objectives of the chapter are to: (i) assess the compliance of Nigerian healthcare providers with telemedicine and remote patient monitoring practices, (ii) evaluate the proficiency of Nigerian healthcare providers in utilizing telemedicine practices, and (iii) retrieve patient opinions on telemedicine and remote monitoring services that Nigerian healthcare providers offer. The methodology used in this chapter primarily involves quantitative analysis. The collected data were analyzed critically and descriptively using tools such as chi-square. Based on the research findings, there is a need for the government to intensify telemedicine practices and invest more in artificial intelligence as a facilitator of telemedicine and a solution to the challenges hindering its implementation in Nigeria.
