This study examined how socially responsible leadership influences employee work passion, focusing on the mediating role of psychological safety. Using a self-administered questionnaire, data were gathered from a sample of 214 permanent faculty members and administrative staff across public universities in Uganda. Statistical analysis demonstrated a clear positive association between socially responsible leadership, psychological safety, and work passion. Furthermore, psychological safety was shown to partially mediate the relationship between leadership behaviour and work passion. The evidence indicates that ethical behaviour from leaders strongly shapes whether employees feel psychologically safe, which in turn elevates their passion for their roles. These findings highlight the importance of socially responsible conduct, indicating that university supervisors and managers need to pay close attention to workplace behaviours to cultivate a secure and motivating institutional environment.
Employee engagement and morale are critical to the effective functioning of public universities. This research demonstrates that leadership ethics are not merely abstract values, but practical drivers of staff well-being. By showing that ethical leadership fosters psychological safety and subsequently elevates work passion, the findings offer institutional decision-makers an evidence-based rationale to improve supervisory conduct and create more supportive working environments.
The abstract does not indicate a commercialisation pathway or direct technology transfer application. The findings provide early-stage organisational insights that could inform human resource management strategies or leadership training programmes within higher education institutions and public-sector organisations, but they remain at the level of academic research rather than a marketable tool.
