The huge increase in news content in the fast-changing world of social media has resulted in the phenomenon of news overload. This is reflected in individual behaviours such as news curation or avoidance, which have become a significant issue in both academic and journalistic circles. Based on the “news efficacy mediation model”, this article explores the phenomenon of news overload and its effects among social media users in the UAE. Based on a survey of 423 users, the results revealed that fear of missing out reinforces news overload on social media due to users’ desire to stay informed. News overload also has a positive effect on news curation. The findings enhance the theoretical framework for social media news overload and its various effects, especially news avoidance on social media platforms, through its implementation in a non-Western context that reflects the distinct social and digital characteristics of the Middle East.
