Cisplatin is one of the most powerful drugs used in cancer treatment, and it has several side effects, including hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. This study aimed to see if salvia officinalis essential oil extract might protect rats' liver and kidneys against cisplatin damage. Twenty–four male albino rats were divided into 4 groups (6 rats each). G1(control), G2(salvia officinalis essential oil extract), G3(cisplatin), G4(cisplatin+ salvia officinalis essential oil extract). Cisplatin treated rats showed increased serum ALT, AST, ALP, cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL- cholesterol, creatinine and urea concentrations and decreased total protein and albumin concentration. Moreover, cisplatin treated rats significantly increased levels of MDA and decreased SOD and CAT levels in hepatic and renal tissue compared to the control group. Salvia officinalis essential oil extract administration at a dose of (100mg extract of salvia officinalis L./kg.b.wt.) with once intraperitoneal (7.5 mg cisplatin/kg.b.wt.) at the day 10th of the experiment renormalized and reversed the hepatorenal damage induced by cisplatin group due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Histopathological alteration and Immunohistochemistry (TNF alpha) examination showed improvement in the microscopic pictures of both liver and kidneys after using salvia officinalis essential oil extract.
