ROLE OF ALCOHOL IN PREVENTION OF THE RECURRENCE OF THE ACCIDENTALLY OPENED ANGULAR DERMOID CYST

Abstract

Purpose: is to evaluate the effect of alcohol used in accidentally opened dermoid cyst in prevention of inflammation and recurrence Patient and method: It is a comparative interventional study, performed on 60 patients with external angular dermoid cysts that were accidentally opened during surgical removal, they were divided into 2 groups, Group (A) includes 30 patients where only saline was used to wash the surgical field while group(B) includes 30 patients where ethyl alcohol 70% was used. Results: This study included 60 patients divided into 2 groups. There were no clinically significant differences between the 2 groups regarding the demographic data. There were 58.3 % males and 41.67 % females with a mean age of 4.58 yrs (ranged from 1-9 yrs). The post-operative inflammation was 11.67 % in group A and 1.67% in group B. The post-operative recurrence was 5 % in group A and 0% in group B. Conclusion: Using ethyl alcohol during surgery significantly lowers the risk of complications associated with an opened dermoid cyst.
