Risk Prioritization in Mini-Grid Development: Enhancing Sustainability for Electrification

Abstract

As we approach the 2030 mark for attaining sustainable development goals, research and practical efforts are being dedicated to the proliferation of mini-grids for electrification in developing countries. This effort is expected to increase electricity access and reduce emissions- a major culprit of climate change. Although mini-grids are important in the bottom-top approach for electrification in developing countries, they are also faced with various risks that may reduce their success in increasing electricity access. To mitigate mini-grid risk, this study identifies, categorizes, and prioritizes risk associated with mini-grid businesses based on severity. The results show that the most severe risk is unpredictable energy demand, while the least severe is risk related to the environment.
