Responsive Facades: Integrating Responsive Materials for Energy Efficiency in Nigeria

Abstract

The ability to successfully blend local climatic variables to provide thermal and visual comfort for occupants while relying little to none - on non-renewable energy sources is what defines climate-responsive architecture. This study did a case study on different climate-responsive facades in mixed-use high-rise projects in Lagos, Nigeria. The paper also reviewed the design history of the facade, salient materials constituting responsive facades, and how they shape energy efficiency. Especially interesting is Nigeria's urban context, where the adoption of adaptive shading, dynamic glazing, and bio-responsive facades can decrease cooling loads and improve thermal comfort. Real buildings, including The Heritage Place in Lagos, The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) Building, Al Bahr Towers in Abu Dhabi, and The Edge in Amsterdam, illustrate the effectiveness and problems of the systems. The study concludes by proposing recommendations on how to advance responsive facade technologies through interdisciplinary research, policy support, cost-effective solutions, and adoption of local materials to enable broader application in international and regional areas.
