Responsible Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) In Healthcare

Abstract

This chapter aims to explore the principles of responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption within the healthcare sector, focusing on the ethical, social, and regulatory considerations associated with the development, deployment, and use of AI technologies. It employs “1100 medicine details” sourced openly from online pharmacies and healthcare portals. Using a machine learning approach, the medicines were grouped according to their similarities in composition, usage, dosage, and side effects, and a unique Natural Language Processing (NLP) model was developed to provide recommendations on usage. Testing of the computer program indicates that the recommendation system can take the name of the symptoms a user is experiencing, query them, and thereafter provide recommendations in terms of drugs and their usage. This research is significant because it addresses critical gaps and challenges that hinder the effective implementation of AI in the healthcare sector. By critically analysing the ethical, social, and regulatory considerations underlying the integration and implementation of AI in the health field, the study contributes to the development of guidelines, best practices, and recommendations for its adoption.
