Relevant Application of Machine Learning in the Management of COVID-19

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic was a global phenomenon that brought the whole world to a standstill. The monumental effect of the pandemic on the social-economic life of the world’s population cannot be overemphasized. The discovery of Omicron (a variant of concern) has continued to raise more concern about the deaths associated with the pandemic, already above 6 million. The role of machine learning in addressing the challenges associated with detection, diagnosis, and management of COVID-19 as well as classification, drug discovery, and prognosis is presented in this chapter. The mode of transmission of the COVID-19 disease and variants of the disease are presented. Recent advances in machine learning algorithms for prognosis, prediction, diagnosis, treatments, and management of the COVID-19 disease are discussed. Accuracies recorded by most models are in the neighborhood of 90%, which suggests the importance of machine learning techniques as veritable tools for the management of the COVID-19 pandemic and a likely area of research for addressing the menace of the COVID-19 pandemic on the socio-economic well-being of the world populace.
