Regulating AI in Occupational Therapy: Governance, Laws, and Policy Implications

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly enhance occupational therapy by enabling more nuanced observation, learning, and support for patient's participation and engagement. However, the widespread adoption of AI technologies in this domain raises critical ethical and regulatory concerns that must be addressed. This paper explores the key issues surrounding the use of AI in occupational therapy, including the need for robust regulation, the ethical principles that should guide AI development and deployment, and the current gaps in the regulatory landscape. It highlights the importance of prioritizing the systematic exploration of the regulatory and compliance environment to establish clear regulatory boundaries for the acceptable use of AI in occupational therapy. This research proposes a regulatory framework that aims to ensure the safe and ethical use of AI, address data governance and privacy concerns, and mandate practitioner training and education in AI literacy and ethics. Ultimately, the authors emphasize the need for proactive, forward-thinking policies and innovative research as AI continues to transform occupational therapy practice.
