Equity in mathematics teaching remains a minor aspect in the multilingual classrooms, where teaching strategies focus on the procedural competence rather than the sociocultural significance. In the case of Nigerian educational institutions, algebra teaching is largely taught using abstract symbolic problems written in the English language, even though students live in multilingual localities. This study examined whether reflective practice would assist pre-service mathematics teachers to identify equity issues as well as redesign algebra lessons to include greater participation and accessibility by students. The research was carried out in a Nigerian university and a single case qualitative design was used over a semester (lasting twelve weeks, in an algebra methods course). A total of 20, 300 level pre-service mathematics teachers were selected purposively for the study. The reflective programme consists of weekly facilitated journals, micro-teaching peers, structured peer discussion and facilitator feedback. Thematic analysis was used as the guiding approach to the analysis of data. Data sources were: 240 reflective journal entries, 40 lesson plans, 40 transcripts of peer discussions, observation notes and records of the facilitator feedback. Five themes eventually emerged at the end of the study. Findings revealed that the 12week exposure to reflective models in the pre-service mathematics teacher-preparation programme, resulted in quantifiable pedagogical changes in awareness, task organization, and classroom interaction. Moreover, the results also show that while systematic reflection alone cannot completely combat systemic inequities, it supports more inclusive algebra instruction in multilingual classroom settings.
