This paper presents an innovative, low-cost, and real-time fault detection and localization system for overhead power transmission lines. Developed using an embedded solution, the system combines a National Instruments acquisition board with LabVIEW software to capture and analyze electrical signals. Designed with academic environments in mind, this platform offers universities and research centers an accessible means to investigate and understand the mechanisms of fault locators in a practical setting. The approach employs an experimental methodology wherein the system is rigorously tested under various fault conditions to validate its reliability and performance. The analysis of symmetrical components and the extraction of reactance values are two important steps that improve the fault detection process. Additionally, a modified algorithm is integrated to classify fault types accurately and precisely locate the fault along the transmission line, effectively minimizing false positives and reducing response times. Extensive tests show that the proposed system is much more accurate than the fault locators that are currently used for power transmission lines that are above ground. This enhanced performance not only contributes to improved grid stability by reducing energy losses but also accelerates maintenance and repair operations. Overall, the study shows that low-cost, embedded solutions have a lot of potential to bring fault diagnosis in power systems up to date. This makes the system a useful teaching tool for research in the classroom and a useful tool for use in industry.
