Qualité de vie des patients souffrant de céphalées chroniques quotidiennes à Douala

In plain language

Chronic daily headaches are common disorders that significantly diminish quality of life, yet their specific burden remains poorly documented in Cameroon. A cross-sectional investigation conducted in Douala assessed 120 patients presenting with chronic daily headaches to evaluate this effect. Researchers measured quality of life using the Headache Impact Test, known as the HIT-6 questionnaire. The participants had an average age of 42 years, with an age spread of 15 years. The overall mean HIT-6 score was 62 with a standard deviation of 8, which indicates a severe adverse impact on daily living. The condition was found to affect women more frequently than men. The findings confirm that chronic daily headaches impose a major burden on affected individuals in Douala, underlining a clear need for dedicated, specialised clinical care to address the disorder in this urban setting.

Key takeaways

  • A study of 120 patients in Douala demonstrated that chronic daily headaches severely impair quality of life.
  • The average participant age was 42 years, and women were more affected by the condition than men.
  • The mean HIT-6 score was 62, reflecting a severe overall impact on patients' daily activities.
  • The findings demonstrate an urgent requirement for specialised clinical management of headache disorders in the region.

Why it matters

Chronic headaches cause severe physical and psychological strain, reducing everyday functionality and well-being. By documenting the severe burden experienced by patients in Douala, this evidence helps healthcare planners and clinicians recognise the scale of the issue locally. It emphasises the necessity of establishing dedicated treatment options to better assist affected individuals, particularly women, who experience the condition disproportionately.

Commercialisation angle

The abstract does not indicate an application pathway, as it reports purely observational clinical data regarding disease burden.
