This study evaluated public awareness and acceptance of environmental communication strategies in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State. The study was motivated by the persistent challenges of indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drainage systems, poor waste management practices and the need for effective communication between environmental authorities and residents. Agenda-Setting Theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. A quantitative research method was adopted, using a survey research design. The population of the study was 439,500 residents, from which a sample size of 400 was obtained using Taro Yamane's formula. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select respondents. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to residents aged 18 years and above. Of the 400 copies of questionnaires administered, 373 were retrieved and found valid for analysis, representing a response rate of 93.3%. Data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages and mean scores. The findings showed that residents had a relatively high level of awareness of waste management policies and practices. The study also found that the Department used radio, television, social media, community meetings, sensitisation programmes, posters, flyers and banners as communication strategies. However, communication with community leaders and responses to public complaints were relatively weak. The findings further showed that residents generally accepted the Department's communication strategies and considered them clear and relevant, although satisfaction with the overall waste management approach was moderate. The study concludes that communication has contributed to public awareness and acceptance of waste management in Ughelli North Local Government Area, but communication alone is insufficient to achieve sustained behavioural change. The study recommends regular public enlightenment, stronger community partnerships, improved feedback mechanisms, effective enforcement and better integration of communication with actual waste management services.
