Psychological Reaction among Newly Diagnosed Patients with Chronic Renal Failure

Abstract

Background: Chronic renal failure is a multifaceted reaction having both physical and psychological connotations for the patient. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are highly susceptible to emotional problems especially when starting dialysis common reactions to diagnosis of chronic renal failure a traumatic event include anger, denial, doubt , guilt, anxiety , and shame. Aim of study: This study aimed to assess psychological reaction among newly diagnosed patients with chronic renal failure. Setting: The study was conducted at haemodialysis unit of Urology and Nephrology center (Ghoniem Hospital), affiliated to Mansoura University Hospital, Egypt. Subjects: Purposive sample of 164 newly diagnosed patients with chronic renal failure. Data collection tools: 1) Demographic data, 2) Psychological reaction questionnaires (Anxiety reaction, Denial reaction, Doubt reaction,Shame reaction and Guilt reaction). Result: The studied newly diagnosed patients with chronic renal failure had moderate anxiety reaction level 84.1%, moderate denial reaction level 92.1%, moderate guilt reaction level 71.7%, moderate doubt reaction level 76.2% and had moderate shame reaction level 71.3%. Conclusion: Newly diagnosed patients with chronic renal failure experienced various psychological reactions to their diagnosis. Recommendation: Counselling intervention for newly diagnosed patient at outpatient clinics to provide psychological support regarding their illness.
