Prospects and Challenges of AI Adoption in Nigerian Academic Libraries

2025Open accessOsun State University

Abstract

This research examines the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in Nigerian academic libraries, focusing on their potential to enhance service delivery, improve information retrieval, and foster user engagement. The review identifies transformative opportunities presented by AI, such as data analysis, enhanced search capabilities, and personalized user experiences. However, it also highlights significant challenges, including inadequate funding, lack of technical expertise, and infrastructural limitations that impede effective implementation. The necessity for training programs to equip librarians with AI competencies and strategic planning to overcome barriers is emphasized. Future research directions are proposed, including infrastructure improvements, user-centered AI solutions, and longitudinal studies to fully realize the benefits of AI in library services.
