Prevalence and Factors Associated with Malnutrition in Subjects Aged 30 Years and More in the City of Douala

Abstract

RÉSUMÉ Introduction. La malnutrition est un problème de santé publique. Notre étude avait pour objectif de déterminer la prévalence et les facteurs associés à la malnutrition chez les sujets âgés de plus de 30 ans à Douala. Méthodologie. Notre étude était transversale et analytique. Elle s’est déroulée du 18 Juillet au 05 Septembre 2022 à Douala. Les participants aveint 30 ans et plus. Les tests de chi-deux a permis d’analyser les facteurs associés à la malnutrition. Le seuil de signification était inférieur à 5%. Résultats. Au total, 612 ont été inclus dans l’étude. La moyenne d’âge était de 31,51±5,63 ans. Le sex ratio H/F était de 0,6. Les prévalences de l’obésité, du surpoids et de la dénutrition étaient respectivement de 218 (35,62%), 287(46,89%) et de 7(1.15%). Dans notre étude, 235 (38,40%) des participants avaient révélé avoir des connaissances sur l’alimentation. Il existait une association entre le surpoids et l’âge ([36-41 [ans, p=0,006), le sexe masculin (p=0,005) et le revenu moyen (p=0,006). Le sexe féminin (p=0,04) un revenu moyen-supérieur (p=0,001) étaient associés à l’obésité. Conclusion. Le surpoids et obésité étaient fréquents chez les adultes de 30 ans et plus les facteurs associés à la malnutrition étaient la tranche d’âge de 36 à 41ans, le sexe masculin pour le surpoids, le sexe féminin pour l’obésité, le revenu moyen et la reproduction des habitudes alimentaires de l’enfance. ABSTRACT Introduction. Malnutrition is a public health problem. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with malnutrition among subjects aged over 30 years in Douala. Methodology. Our study was cross-sectional and analytical. It took place from July 18 to September 5, 2022, in Douala. Participants are 30 years old and over. Chi-square tests made it possible to analyze the factors associated with malnutrition. The significance level was less than 5%. Results. A total of 612 were included in the study. The average age was 31.51±5.63 years. The M/F sex ratio was 0.6. The prevalence of obesity, overweight and undernutrition were respectively 218 (35.62%), 287 (46.89%) and 7 (1.15%). In our study, 235 (38.40%) of the participants revealed that they had knowledge about food. There was an association between overweight and age ([36-41 [years, p=0.006), male sex (p=0.005) and average income (p=0.006). Female gender (p=0.04) and upper-middle income (p=0.001) were associated with obesity. Conclusion. Overweight and obesity were common among adults aged 30 and over. The factors associated with malnutrition were the age group of 36 to 41 years, male gender for overweight, female gender for obesity, average income and the reproduction of childhood eating habits.
