Phytochemical analysis, anti-inflammatory property, wound-healing, and anti-granuloma effect of Moroccan aqueous leave extract of <i>Moringa oleifera</i>

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Inflammation is a vital response to injury or infection but can lead to diseases if chronic. Natural remedies like plant extracts present potential alternatives to synthetic drugs, offering efficacy with fewer side effects. This study explores the anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties of the aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera (AEMO) using various animal models. METHODS: AEMO was evaluated in xylene-induced ear edema, carrageenan-induced paw edema, wound healing, and cotton pellet granuloma models. KEY FINDINGS: In the carrageenan model, AEMO demonstrated significant dose-dependent reductions in paw edema (P < .001), with the 350 mg/kg dose achieving 94.4% inhibition, comparable to diclofenac. Similarly, in the cotton pellet model, AEMO significantly reduced granuloma weight at higher doses. The xylene model confirmed AEMO's efficacy, with doses of 175 mg/kg and 350 mg/kg showing reductions in ear edema comparable to diclofenac. In the wound healing model, AEMO accelerated wound closure in a dose-dependent manner, with the 60% AEMO group achieving complete healing by Day 10. Biochemical and hematological analyses showed reductions in inflammatory markers such as ALP, C-reactive protein, and WBC, supporting the anti-inflammatory potential of AEMO. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that AEMO exhibits potent anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties, making it a promising natural alternative to conventional treatments like diclofenac. Further research is warranted to explore its potential clinical applications.
