Physicomechanical Properties of Structural Timber Strengthened with Basalt Mesh Jacketing

Abstract

In a quest for more sustainable means of construction to solve the issues of home shortage, the availability and utilization of sustainable materials is very vital. This study aims to provide a quantitative approach through experimental analysis of the properties and potential utilization of five wood species namely, Hardwood mahogany, Akparata Tree, African Mahoharny, Oganwo, and White Ash wood as a good alternative to conventional over-exploited blocks and concrete used in building construction. The objectives of this research were to investigate and evaluate the physical and mechanical characteristics of the presented wood samples from the above-mentioned species. Basalt mesh was used for jacketing of the woods to improve the properties especially when soaked in water. The experimental study utilized 60 rectangular prisms that were tested for flexural strength while 90 cubes were tested for compressive strength. 105 wood cube samples were exposed to a high temperature of 250℃ under monitored timing of 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, 150 minutes, and 180 minutes then tested for compression. Findings from this research show how wood has a generally improved strength for both flexural and compressive tests with basalt mesh and heating for Oganwo exhibited decent results. There was a generally negative impact of water on the properties of these wood samples. This research concludes that basalt mesh can be used to enhance the properties of these wood types in water areas and dry zones
