Performance Evaluation of Conventional and GA-Tuned PI Controller in Wind Turbine MPPT

Abstract

In this paper, a thorough comparative study between conventional Proportional-Integral (PI) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) tuned PI controllers for Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) is provided. Numerous studies have been carried out to optimize wind turbine extraction as a result of the increasing need for renewable energy sources. Despite their wide applications, conventional PI controllers frequently have trouble adjusting their parameters and fail to operate at their optimal point under strong wind variations and parameter changes. This work investigates the implementation of GA-optimizing PI controllers to improve MPPT performance in wind system applications. In comparison to conventional PI controllers, the proposed GA-tuned PI controller shows enhanced tracking performance in terms of accuracy, rapidity, and so power extracted efficiency. According to the simulation results, the GA tuned PI controller delivers 38% greater power tracking efficiency and 80% faster response time under varying wind conditions. This proposed method confirms that genetic algorithms are effective in optimizing controller parameters for wind energy systems.
