Performance Evaluation of a Fuzzy Logic–Based MPPT Algorithm for Solar Photovoltaic Systems

Abstract

This work presents the fuzzy based maximum power point tracking in solar panel. MATLAB/SIMULINK is used to model and analyse the solar system. When the solar panel operates at its optimal point, it means that the PV panel can generate a maximum output. Due to the voltage-current characteristic of solar panel is nonlinear therefore it is not possible to establish analytically the maximum power operating voltage which changes when the solar irradiation or cell temperature varies. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) was used to determine the voltage level at which to operate the solar panel in order to maximize the power extraction. Numerous fuzzy based optimized MPPT have been developed and the performance of designed controller has also been examined at different sun irradiances and temperatures. Results obtained from the simulation indicates that fuzzy based P&O MPPT is enhanced where it enables solar panel to deliver an output with a reduced ripple.
