Patients' expectations regarding end-of-life care in advanced respiratory diseases

Abstract

<bold>Introduction:</bold> End-of-life care in advanced respiratory diseases presents unique challenges for healthcare providers, patients, and families. Understanding patients' expectations in this context is crucial for delivering personalized and patient-centered care. <bold>Objective:</bold> This study aims to explore the expectations of patients with advanced respiratory diseases regarding end-of-life care, including preferences for treatment, symptom management, communication, and decision-making. <bold>Methods:</bold> A qualitative research approach was conducted, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 42 patients diagnosed with advanced respiratory diseases. Hospitalized in Hassan 2 regional hospital between 01 august 2023 and 31 January 2024, Interviews were conducted to explore patients' experiences, preferences, and expectations regarding end-of-life care. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurring themes and patterns in the data. <bold>Results:</bold> Preliminary analysis of interview data revealed several key themes related to patients' expectations regarding end-of-life care. These include preferences for symptom management, desire for open and honest communication with healthcare providers, importance of involving family members in decision-making, and preferences for the location and mode of care delivery (figure 1) <bold>Conclusion:</bold> This study sheds light on the diverse expectations of patients with advanced respiratory diseases regarding end-of-life care. Findings emphasize the importance of personalized and patient-centered approaches to care delivery, tailored to meet the individual needs and preferences of patients and their families.
