Overview of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy for Biomass and BioFuel Characterization

Abstract

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy techniques have demonstrated both qualitative and quantitative results while providing a quick, inexpensive, and nondestructive examination of biomass. This study reviewed basic information about FTIR techniques as they relate to biofuel production from biomass. The significance of FTIR spectroscopy to biomass studies was revised, and relevant studies were examined. In addition, FTIR applications in hyphenated systems were reviewed. The use of FTIR techniques in research on biomass valorization is a growing field of study that will increase the range of known potential uses for biomass.
