Abstract Introduction Contaminated food consumption is the cause of more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrheal diseases, which kill the most, to cancer. In agriculture, the misuse of pesticides creates residues that pollute foods including milk and dairy products. Aim To assess the level of contamination in residues of 6 synthetic insecticides in fresh milk, and its by-products. Method This cross-sectional study included 45 samples of cow’s milk, curd and cheese. The samples per producer and per commune of fresh milk (6 samples of 500ml), curd (6 samples of 500ml) and cheese (3 samples of 500g) were collected aseptically. Quantitation of insecticide residues was performed by High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after QuEChERS extraction of the residues. The results of the analysis were compared with the Maximum residue limit (MRL) of the Codex Alimentarius and the European Union and compared according to matrices and localities. Results Insecticides’ main active ingredients authorized in Benin are acetamiprid (19%), cypermethrin (9%), lambdacyalothrin (8%), chlorpyrifos (9%) and profenofos (7%). All samples analyzed were free of chlorpyrifos, profenofos, lambdacyalothrin and DDT. Cypermethrin was quantified in all samples at levels ranging from 0.3 to 1.0 mg/ kg, all of which are above the MRL (0.05 mg/ kg). Acetamiprid was quantified in 41 samples out of 45 at levels ranging from 0.3 to 1.4 mg/ kg that are above the MRL (0.2 mg/ kg). Conclusion This study revealed a contamination of milk and its derivatives in residues of acetamiprid and cypermethrin: a health risk related to the consumption.
