Abstract

Mushrooms, belonging to the fungal kingdom, have garnered significant attention for their potential health benefits and are considered valuable sources of nutraceuticals, minerals, and proximate constituents. Nutraceuticals are bioactive compounds derived from natural sources that provide both nutritional and pharmaceutical benefits. Mushrooms are rich in nutraceutical constituents, with beta-glucans being one of the most notable. Beta-glucans, complex polysaccharides found in species like Reishi (Ganodermalucidum), Shiitake (Lentinulaedodes), and Maitake (Grifolafrondosa), have been associated with immune-enhancing properties and potential anti-cancer effects. These bioactive compounds have gained attention for their potential in supporting immune function and preventing various diseases. Mushrooms are low in calories and fat but high in dietary fiber, making them beneficial for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels and promoting feelings of fullness. Additionally, mushrooms provide proteins that contain all the essential amino acids required by the human body, making them a valuable protein source, especially for individuals following vegetarian or vegan diets. Incorporating mushrooms into a balanced diet can provide a natural and nutritious way to support immune function, promote antioxidant defense, and maintain overall well-being.
