Nerve conduction studies among Diabetic patients at Minia University Hospital.

Abstract

Background: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most prevalent form of neuropathy. The occurrence of DPN is more likely in older individuals who have had diabetes for a long time. The chance of developing diabetic neuropathy like other micro vascular problems increases with the severity and duration of hyperglycemia. Additionally, certain people may have hereditary traits that make them more likely to develop complications such as diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), The aim of the work is to evaluate DPN associated with Diabetic Patients. Methods: The current study is a case-control study was conducted on 44 persons 13 males and 31 females of the same age group (28:55 years) were selected from outpatient clinic of Diabetes and Endocrinology unit, Department of internal medicine at Minia University Hospital from february 2020 to May 2022. Results: Diabetic group shows significant lower amplitude, affected latency and prolonged Conduction velocity (CV) of sural nerve (p=0.04, 0.03, 0.004) respectively. Diabetic group shows significant lower amplitude of Rt motor tibial, Lt motor peroneal and Lt motor tibial (p=0.001, 0.01, 0.04) respectively, and lower conduction velocity of Rt motor peroneal, Rt motor tibial, Lt motor peroneal, Lt motor tibial, (p=0.03, 0.001, 0.0001, 0.0001) respectively than healthy control group. Conclusion Diabetic group had lower amplitude, affected latency and prolonged conduction velocity (CV) in Rt motor tibial, Lt motor peroneal, Rt motor peroneal, Lt motor tibial and sural nerves more than healthy control group which were statistically significant.
