Multi-Orbital Protection Schemes for Space-based Solar Power Systems

Abstract

This Space solar power systems are recognized to be feasible sources of renewable energy. Their usefulness arises due to advances in satellite and space technology. However, the usefulness of space based solar power systems (and satellites) faces threats from the increased deployment of anti - satellite weapons and evolving Astro-politics. Therefore, there is need to design mechanisms to protect in-orbit space solar satellites. The research presented proposes a data deterrence approach and a novel multi-orbital mechanism for space solar satellites. The space solar satellites using the multi-orbital mechanism can switch to different orbits thereby making weapon target more difficult. Performance analysis shows that the use of the proposed multi - orbital approach enhances the accessible energy on average by 31 % - 85%.
