Modern Data Stack Demystified: A Strategic Framework for Scalable Adoption

Abstract

The rapid growth of increasingly complex and extensive data is forcing organizations to adopt modern data stacks (MDS) as the privileged foundation for extracting value and informing strategic decisions. Despite their flexibility, however, MDS projects face major difficulties, particularly in terms of governance, interoperability, and scalability, which can seriously compromise the effectiveness of data stacks. To overcome these constraints, this paper explores key challenges and introduces a formal data stack adoption framework designed to guide organizations along their data modernization roadmap. By mapping transformation stages to key operational and strategic functions, the framework supports an incremental, evidence-based approach. It helps organizations stay aligned with their goals, enabling MDS to evolve at their appropriate pace while maintaining consistent strategic alignment.
