Mobility Pattern and Safety of the Older Population in Accessing Public Transport in Emerging Global Cities

Abstract

This study examined the travel behaviors and mobility challenges experienced by older adults (60 years and above) residing in emerging cities of Nigeria. The findings indicate that elderly individuals receive no special consideration when using public transport, which significantly hinders their ability to move around the area. Data were collected using 250 questionnaires distributed to senior citizens at bus stops while they waited for public transport. Field observations revealed that major obstacles to accessing transport include deteriorating road infrastructure (e.g., poor road networks), a lack of seating and shelter at stops, a lack of designated bus terminals, and street traders encroaching on roadways. Consequently, this research aims to enhance both the travel safety and overall mobility of the aging population in Lagos. Proposed interventions include: Consistent enforcement actions to prevent roadside trading, Installation of seating and protective shelters at waiting points, and Development of pedestrian-friendly walking facilities. Ultimately, the outcomes of this work may inform the design of transport management policies aimed at improving public transport accessibility within the study area.
