Mitigating impact of <scp>l</scp>-carnitine against dimethoate induction of hepatic and testicular genotoxicity in rats: the role of oxidative stress

Abstract

Dimethoate (DM) is a widely used organophosphate insecticide in Egyptian fields with toxic impacts on mammalians. This paper intends to evaluate the role of l-carnitine (LC) on DM-generated hepatic and testicular subchronic genotoxicity. Male rats were partitioned into 4 groups: I: control; II: DM (20 mg/kg b.wt.); III: DM + LC (200 mg/kg b.wt.); IV: LC only. All treatments administered orally twice weekly for 11 weeks. Significant DNA damage, histopathological changes, intense caspase 3 and Bax immune-expression decrease in catalase (CAT); superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities with increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were revealed. Co-treatment of LC with DM alleviated all the above alterations.
