Migration and Social Economic Development in Nigeria

Abstract

Nigeria socio-economic development had failed to keep speed with the steady rise in migration. The bad governance, unemployment, poverty, food crisis, hunger, insecurity, poor education standard, high cost of living and transportation, famines, war, conflicts, political instability, and low economic standard Nigeria is facing today has cause serious alarming. The gifted natural resources from above has become unaffordable for the citizens. Politicians and elites are the owner of the both economic and political power of the resources. They control the both political and economic affairs of the country. These issues have caused a serious migration of people in Nigeria the conditions people are facing especially under this political time, things are no longer at ease and the center cannot hold again. The increase number of graduate students in Nigeria without good jobs has weakens the socio-economic development. The increase of goods and rise of prices of commodities couple with bad climate condition makes many people to run away from their own country. This study explored migration and socioeconomic development in Nigeria. The collection of data will be on secondary data collection while content analysis will be adopted for analysis. The study adopt theory propounded by Samuel Strouffer a sociologist in 1949 which is deprivation theory. Socio-economic and political instabilities, unemployment, poverty, insecurity, poor education standard among others are the major cause of migration of people in other countries. People move out in search of greener pastures and safety places to better their lives. The study concluded that the government should look into the different issues that trigger migration ranging from socioeconomic and political instabilities, insecurity, food crisis, high cost of living, unemployment among others and tackle them these would create way for good conditions of Nigerians. When people have assess to good jobs, good food, affordable prices of commodities and better lives no one would think of moving out of the country unless the person is going for pleasure and business to come back.
