Metal Oxide Heterojunctions in Photocatalytic Pollutant Degradation

Abstract

Water pollution and environmental problems are increasing worldwide, necessitating the development of robust, innovative, cost-effective, and long-term ecological remediation solutions. Metal oxide-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are regarded as a potential technology to alleviate water pollution. This chapter highlights the properties of different metal oxides and common heterojunctions, such as type-II, Z-scheme, and S-scheme, together with heterojunction formation verification techniques. These heterojunctions are synthesized using various methods that are detailed in this chapter, and different forms of organic pollutant remediation using single, binary, ternary, and quaternary components are covered. Furthermore, the chapter provides valuable insights into the current advancements, challenges, and prospects of metal oxide heterojunctions for applications in environmental organic pollutant remediation.
