It was found that obesity is combined with low-grade chronic systemic inflammation that induces pro-inflammatory status and oxidative Stress. So, our study aimed to explore the potential link between oxidative Stress and obesity. 100 adults were included in descriptive- cross sectional study to investigate the amount of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Malonaldehyde (MDA), and antioxidant catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The study was conducted at outpatient clinics at Suez Canal University and Ismailia general hospitals from May 2017 to December 2017. The study group was split into two different groups, group A: Obese group (n=50) and group B: non-obese group (n=50). Regarding the mean age, there was no statistical difference between the two groups, while the obese group had significantly higher mean BMI and weight than the control group. Obese subjects had significantly higher concentrations of H2O2 (P <0.001). On contrary catalase enzyme showed significantly lower concentration in obese subjects (P<0.001). BMI showed significant correlation with hydrogen peroxide, MDA, catalase enzyme and SOD enzyme. Also, hydrogen peroxide and catalase enzyme showed significant weak negative correlation with obese group. Obesity may reduce the activity of protective antioxidants in the body and may increase systemic oxidative stress.
